THE PASSION ACCORDING TO JOHN: Chapters 18 & 19

Following the success of the virtual Lent presentations, Prof Mary Coloe is presenting an additional session exploring the Passion narrative according to John's Gospel.

John presents a completely different interpretation of the death of Jesus on the Cross.

In John, the Cross is the moment of exaltation and triumph. Jesus brings his mission to completion and announces, “It is finished.” Poor translations, and confusing all the Gospels, can hide the rich beauty of John’s presentation.

During this season of Lent, we have been fortunate to have four Australian biblical scholars at Yarra Theological Union, a College of the University of Divinity, guiding us through an exploration of the readings for each week. The videos for each of these sessions can be viewed below.

Speaking to us from their own area of expertise were:

Dr Mark O'Brien OP, Associate Professor in Old Testament with specialisations in the Pentateuch and Prophetic writings will guide us through the First Readings. .

Dr Mary Reaburn NDS, who is an expert in the Wisdom Literature of the Old Testament, will draw out the richness of the Responsorial Psalms.

Dr Chris Monaghan CP, author of the Friendly Guide to Paul, will explore the longings and hopes of the early Christian communities found in the Second Readings.

Prof Mary Coloe PBVM, a world recognised expert on the Gospel of John and author of the Friendly Guide to John, will draw out the significance and meaning of the Gospel readings as they appear each Sunday in Lent.
