This book is a collection of essays by Elaine Wainwright written between 1988 and 2017. They range across various subject areas in feminist theology, eco-theology and hermeneutics.

About the editors

Elizabeth Dowling is a Sister of Mercy and an independent biblical scholar living in Ballarat, Australia. She specializes in the study of the New Testament, in particular the Gospel of Luke, reading from an ecofeminist perspective. Elizabeth is the author of a monograph, Taking Away the Pound: Women, Theology and the Parable of the Pounds in the Gospel of Luke, LNTS 324 (T&T Clark International, 2007).

Anne Elvey is a poet, editor and researcher, living on unceded Bunurong Country. Her most recent scholarly work is Reading with Earth: Contributions of the New Materialism to an Ecological Feminist Hermeneutics (T&T Clark, 2023). Anne’s poetry collections include: Intents (Liquid Amber Press, 2025) and (C)loud: A poetic response to child sexual abuse in the Roman Catholic church (Palaver Press, 2025). Anne is an affiliate with the School of Languages, Literatures, Cultures and Linguistics, Monash University.

Veronica Lawson is a Sister of Mercy and eco-feminist biblical scholar who was the first woman President of the Australian Catholic Biblical Association. Her 2015 publication, The Blessing of Mercy: Bible Perspectives and Ecological Challenges, was widely acclaimed as a key resource for the Jubilee Year of Mercy.

Robert Myles is Associate Professor of New Testament at Wollaston Theological College, University of Divinity. Originally from Aotearoa New Zealand, he currently resides on Whadjuk Noongar country, in the city of Perth, Western Australia. Recent publications include Jesus: A Life in Class Conflict (Zer0 Books, 2023) and the co-edited volume Habitats of the Basileia: Essays in Honour of Elaine M. Wainwright (Sheffield Phoenix Press, 2024).

About the author

Elaine M Wainwright RSM (1948–2024) was an Australian theologian and biblical scholar. She obtained a BA Hons from the University of Queensland in 1980, an MA (Theol) from Catholic Theological Union in Chicago in 1985 and a PhD from the University of Queensland in 1990. From 2003 until her retirement in 2014, she was Richard Maclaurin Professor in Theology at the University of Auckland. She is best known for her feminist scholarship in Matthew’s Gospel, her work on gender and healing within the Graeco-Roman world and her contribution to the Earth Bible Project. Her publications include Towards a Feminist Critical Reading of the Gospel of Matthew (de Gruyter, 1991), Woman Healing/Healing Women: The Genderization of Healing in Early Christianity (Equinox, 2006), Shall We Look for Another: A Feminist Re-reading of the Matthean Jesus (Orbis, 2008) and Habitat, Human and Holy: An Eco-Rhetorical Reading of the Gospel of Matthew (Sheffield Phoenix, 2016).
