Publishers and authors often pick significant dates to launch books. In this tradition I have decided that Transgender Memorial Day, 20 November 2025 is an appropriate day to write a review of The Rainbow of God's Creation by Trish Hindmarsh. This day has not featured across Australian Catholic content creators on social media except forthose such as Sacred Heart Mission, St Kilda, and the advocacy groups for LGBTIQA+ Catholics. This is a challenge posed by the subtitle of the book, LGBTIQA+ Realities and Catholicism. In the Rainbow of God's Creation, Trish Hindmarsh has given us a guide in the Synodal practice of "discernment through dialogue, leading to greater understanding, conversion of heart and action". This is in fact an introduction to the work of LGBTIQA+ allies. And I welcome those allies from membership of the Auistralian Catholic Bishops Conference, parish communities, schools, religious orders, and all who tick the Catholic box on the census form. James Alison endorses "this little book" but its size betrays a wealth of infomation, resources, spirituality and wisdom. The layout like our community,is rich in colour, diversity and surpises!! This is not a quick read, It is a reference source with multiple footnotes, invitations to prayerful reflection, quotable quotes and it is a handy size if like me, you read on public transport. Endorsement from Archbishop Eremitus Mark Coleridge and a preface from Bishop Vioncent Long provide a level of support that should see this work widely welcomed across pastoral agencies and personnel. I hope it will become a key reference for those enaged in religious formation and spiritual direction. At the heart of this book Trish Hindmarch introduces us to the story of people who are " the unique expression of divine artistry within the wide colourful spectrum of the vast human family". As the Rainbow sheep of my family I am grateful; to Trish for providing this opportunity for Cathoics to discover the grace of allyship with the LGBTIQA+ community.

LOOK INSIDE

The Rainbow of God’s Creation outlines the Catholic Church’s teachings and their historical origins in relation to people who identify as LGBTIQA+. The guide explores past and current scientific and theological developments that can inform new approaches to LGBTIQA+ people, challenging remaining Catholic doctrines that condemn non-heterosexual expressions of sexual love. It introduces examples of Catholics encountering, engaging in dialogue with – and blessing the loving commitment of – gay, lesbian, and transgender people. Inside you will hear from Pope Francis, members of religious orders, priests, and lay founders of Catholic pastoral organisations plus many LGBTIQA+ people themselves. These models of hope are seen as opening the way towards an inclusive, open-hearted Catholic Church, willing to embrace our LGBTIQA+ siblings as precious expressions of God’s limitless, creative Love.

From their dedicated work – and the findings of global consultations such as the Australian Plenary Council and the universal Synod on Synodality – some implications, conclusions, and practical suggestions for response and action from the Catholic Church are offered in the final chapter. It is recognised that necessary changes in Church teaching and practice require Christian discernment, prudence, and an exercise of Church authority that is respectful of the ‘Sense of the Faithful’, and guided by the Holy Spirit.

Preface by Bishop Vincent Long Van Nguyen, OFM Conv. Bishop of Parramatta.

”It is rare to see such a well-written, straightforward, pastoral and unashamedly Catholic introduction to one of the Church’s best kept, but now
emerging, secrets …in addition, this little book is suffused with joy, making it very special indeed.”

– James Alison,
Catholic theologian, priest, author and global teacher

”The Church is seeking a new engagement with people who identify as LGBTQIA+ and who often feel rejected by the Church. It’s not easy to see the way forward, but the journey starts with the ear… In what is offered here, Trish Hindmarsh helps us take a step in the right direction on the long journey of dialogue.”
– Mark Coleridge
Archbishop Emeritus Brisbane
