The papers in this volume originate from a colloquium held in Adelaide. Australia. The original conference took pace only a few weeks after the September 11 terrorist attacks in the United States, and was very much aware of the concrete reality of human brokenness and the pain and anguish that result. Yet it was also clear that it was theologically and pastorally incomplete to hold a conference on sin without also talking about the possibility and indeed the reality of salvation. Only a couple of the papers make salvation their specific theme, but few of the others fail to come back to the message of hope. While biblical, theological, cultural and scientific aspects of the nature of sin are treated in this volume, a significant and vital part of its contribution to the current theological discussion is that the message of hope in Christ is never far from the surface. In a world that is unable to escape the tragedy of human initiated pain and suffering, this volume seeks to provide a timely and much needed contribution to our reflections on the underlying questions of sin and salvation.
